The Literacy Cafe'

Following the framework of The Daily 5 and The Cafe',
each day in Room 102, students participate in 1 to 2 mini-lessons targeting particular reading comprehension strategies.
These mini-lessons are approximately 15 minutes long.
The focus of these mini-lessons sets a purpose for learning and develops a sense of urgency to obtain 'higher-level thinking skills' during daily reading practice! I want students to get EXCITED about reading and engage them to be 'THINKING about their thinking' during self-selected reading times!

Immediately following a mini-lesson, the students' practice what their thinking and demonstrate their new learning during a Round of the Daily 5.
Here is what Room 102's daily mini-lessons and Rounds look like!
Students use the CAFE' menu as a visual aid to help them think about their strategies when reading, select new learning targets to practice, and demonstrate their new learning in a multitude of ways. Our CAFE' menu strategies include COMPREHENSION, ACCURACY, FLUENCY, & EXPANDED Vocabulary. Throughout the year, Students will add new skills related to each strategy and maintain a personal reflection sheet which highlights mastered CAFE' skills! Sneak a peek at some of the skills we're working on using the daily CAFE' menu!

In addition, I meet individually with students to assess each reading strategy. I also guide them in creating their own 'I Can' learning targets which reflect each reading strategy that is introduced in the first grade CAFE'!

Here is what our new CRITTER CAFE' menu looks like--

School has just begun so we have many new strategies to add this year!
